Mindfulness for Beginners: 5 Simple Exercises You Can Do Anywhere

Mindfulness simply means paying attention to the present moment, on purpose, without judging it. You don't need an app or an hour a day. These five exercises take a few minutes and work anywhere.

1. Three mindful breaths

Stop what you're doing. Take three slow breaths and notice how each one feels: the air coming in, your chest rising, the breath leaving. That's it.

2. The 5-4-3-2-1 exercise

Name five things you can see, four you can hear, three you can feel, two you can smell and one you can taste. It's a quick way to bring your attention back to the present.

3. Body scan

Close your eyes and slowly move your attention from your toes to the top of your head. Notice any tension without trying to change it.

4. Mindful tea

Make a cup of tea and drink it with full attention: the warmth of the mug, the smell, the taste. No phone.

5. Eyes-closed rest

Lie back, close your eyes and focus only on physical sensations for ten minutes. Many people find it easier with a heated eye massager: the warmth and rhythm give your mind something gentle to focus on.
